Consumer units and rewires
The board and the wiring behind everything else.
A modern consumer unit is usually the first job before solar, a battery or an EV charger, and an old rubber or aluminium rewire is the job that makes a house safe again. Both are everyday work for us: a consumer unit change can often be priced from photos, a rewire always starts with a site survey, and every job is certificated through NAPIT.
What's included
What a consumer unit or rewire from us includes.
RCBO boards
One RCBO per circuit so a fault trips one thing, not the whole house. Surge protection as standard on new boards.
Renewables-ready
Spare ways, correctly rated main switch and isolators positioned for the solar, battery or charger coming next.
Full and partial rewires
Whole-house rewires for older properties, or a kitchen, extension or outbuilding on its own.
Earthing and bonding
Main earthing, bonding to gas and water and, where needed, an upgrade to the supply arrangement.
Minimal disruption
Routes planned room by room, floors and finishes protected, and a tidy-up at the end of every day.
Certificates every time
Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification through NAPIT, emailed to you and to building control.

When to upgrade
Signs the board has had its day.
Wire fuses or a plastic board without RCD protection, a board that trips when the kettle and the shower are on together, or an installer telling you it cannot take an EV charger: any of these means a new consumer unit is due. Doing it before the renewables go in avoids paying for the same visit twice.
- Rewireable fuses or no RCD protection
- No spare ways for new circuits
- Signs of heat or scorching
- Adding solar, a battery, a heat pump or an EV charger
Rewires
A rewire planned like a project, not a surprise.
We survey the whole property, agree the socket and lighting layout with you, then work through the house in a fixed order so you always know which rooms are affected. First fix, second fix and testing are all done by our own electricians.
Good to know
Common questions.
How much is a consumer unit upgrade?
Typically £650 to £950 for a full RCBO board with surge protection, including testing, the Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification. Quoted exactly after seeing the board.
Does a rewire mean redecorating?
Some making good is unavoidable where cables are chased in, but we keep it to a minimum and tell you exactly where before we start. Empty properties are the easiest time to do it.
Do I need a new board before solar or an EV charger?
Not always, but often. We check the board at survey and only recommend a change when it is genuinely needed for safety or capacity.
